The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize 2012

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the European Union (EU). The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2012

Mo Yan

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2012 was awarded to Mo Yan "who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary".

Mo Yan has focused an unflinching eye on what he calls the darkness and ugliness of 20th-century Chinese society in a prolific writing career that  landed him the 2012 Nobel prize for litterature. The prize won by the writer is worth 8 million crowns ($1.2 million) and was given by the Swedish Academy.

Vayalar Award 2012 - Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri

Poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri has bagged this year’s Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Award. He bagged the award for his collection of poems Anthimahakalam. 

The Vayalar Award is given for the best literary work in Malayalam. The award was instituted in 1977 by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust in memory of the poet and lyricist Vayalar Ramavarma (1928-1975). A sum of Rs.25,000/-, a silver plate and certificate constitutes the award. It is presented each year on October 27, the death anniversary of Vayalar

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize-2012


Eleven young scientists have been selected for Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize-2012, India’s premier awards in the field of science and technology.
Shantanu Chowdhury of the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology and Suman Kumar Dhar of the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine at the Jawaharlal Nehru University bagged the prize in the field of biological sciences.
In the area of chemical sciences, the prizes went to Govindsamy Mugesh of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) and Gangadhar J Sanjayan of the CSIR National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.
Ravishankar Narayanan of IISc and Y Shanthi Pavan of Indian Institute of Technology-Madras won the prizes in the engineering sciences category.
In the area of mathematical sciences, Siva Ramachandran Athreya and Debashish Goswami of the Indian Statistical Institute won the prestigious prize.
Sandip Basu of the Radiation Medicine Centre at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre bagged the prize in the medical sciences category.
In the area of physical sciences, Arindam Ghosh of IISc and Krishnendu Sengupta of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science won the prize.
The winners were announced by Samir K Brahmachari, Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, at a function here to mark the 70th foundation day of Council.
The prize is named after the founder-Director General of CSIR and carries a cash component of Rs 5 lakh.
It is given annually to young scientists below the age of 45 who have made outstanding contributions in any field of science and technology.

The 2012 Laureates define essential conditions for global peace and security
This year’s group of four Laureates highlights the essential conditions for global peace and security: effective nonviolent resistance, a recognition that the arms industry is part of the problem, human and women’s rights, and the preservation of our precious ecological resources.
The 2012 Right Livelihood Awards go to four recipients. One award is an honorary award, the three other laureates will share the € 150,000 cash award.

HAYRETTIN KARACA (Turkey) receives the 2012 Honorary Award “for a lifetime of tireless advocacy and support for the protection and stewardship of our natural world, combining successful entrepreneurship with effective environmental activism”.




The Jury awards SIMA SAMAR (Afghanistan) “for her longstanding and courageous dedication to human rights, especially the rights of women, in one of the most complex and dangerous regions in the world”.

It is the first time that a Right Livelihood Award goes to Afghanistan.

The Jury recognises GENE SHARP (USA) “for developing and articulating the core principles and strategies of nonviolent resistance and supporting their practical implementation in conflict areas around the world”.

 Man Booker Prize: Julian Barnes for his novel „The Sense of an ending‟. The award
promotes the finest in fiction and was first awarded in 1969.

 Miss World 2011: Miss Venezuela Ivian Sarcoss

 PEN/ Pinter International Writer of Courage Award 2011:  Italian
writer, Roberto Saviano, whose work exposed the organised crime of the Neopolitan
mafia will share the award with   Sir David Hare . He was under hiding when the
book was written.

 Ramon Magasaysay Award, 2011: This year there are two Indians who bagged the
award; Nileema Mishra and Harish Hande, who worked for the empowerment of
Indian People. Dr.hande was recognised for bringing solar lights to people who have
no power. Ms. Mishra worked for the poor in Maharashtra by lending them money and addressing their aspirations and adversities. Another Indians who have won the
award include Acharya Vinobha Bhave, Jayaprakash Narayan and Mother Teresa.
The award is named after famous Philipine President and is governed by the
Rockfeller Foundation.

 World Food Prize: The World Food Prize Foundation is honoring John Agyekum
Kufuor former president of Ghana, and Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, former president of
Brazil, for creating and implementing government policies that alleviated hunger and
poverty in their countries. The World Food Prize was created in 1987 by Nobel Peace
Prize winner Dr. Norman Borlaug, to recognize individuals who have contributed
landmark achievements in increasing the quality, quantity or availability of food in
the world.

 Guardian First Book Award: Siddhartha Mukherjee (India born  - American
physician) for his extraordinary biography of cancer, The Emperor of All Maladies.
(has already won him a Pulitzer prize in his native US)

 Pritzker Architecture Prize:  “To honor a living architect whose built work
demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment,
which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built
environment through the art of architecture.” The international prize, is awarded each
year to a living architect for significant achievement, was established by the Pritzker
family of Chicago through their Hyatt Foundation  in 1979. The award consists of
$100,000 (US) and a bronze medallion. The award is conferred on the laureate at a
ceremony held at an architecturally significant site throughout the world. For the year
2012, the prize has been conferred on Wang Shu for recycling materials from
demolished buildings to create a sustainable design for exciting buildings.

 The Golden Bear Awards: Italian documentary Caesar Must
Die (Cesaredevemorire), showing inmates of a high-security prison staging
Shakespeare's “Julius Caesar”, was awarded the Berlin film festival's top award.
Directors Paolo Taviani and Vittorio Taviani received the Golden Bear award.

 Golden Peacock Award: The 42nd
International Filmfare Festival of India was held
at Panaji, Goa. The Columbian movie Porfirio directed by Alejandro Landes won the
Golden Peacock Award.

The highest award for science in India - CSIR Declares Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2011


Eleven Scientist have been selected for Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science & Technology for the year 2011.Dr Samir K Brahamachari, Director General, Council of Scientific Research and Industrial development announced the names of scientists today at the celebration of CSIR foundation Day here today. Till 2010, 463 scientists (including 14 women scientists) have been bestowed with the prestigious SSB Prize.

Some Information: The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology is awarded annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and Physics. The purpose of the prize is to recognize outstanding Indian work (according to the view of CSIR awarding committee) in science and technology. It is the highest award for science in India.[1] The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.[2] It was first awarded in 1958.

Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology up to the age of 45 years is eligible for the Prize. The Prize is awarded on the basis of contributions made through work done primarily in India during the five years preceding the year of the Prize. The Prize comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of Rs. 500,000. In addition recipients also get Rs 15,000 per month up to the age of 65 years.
